The American Gem Society

Julia and David Gardner are honored to be members of the American Gem Society (AGS), and David served as the Society president from 2012 to 2014. AGS is the jewelry industry’s leading organization dedicated to the highest ethical and professional behavior standards through education, certification, and re-certification of its members, gemstone standards, and gemstone research.

Did you know that only 1 in 20 jewelers meet the highest standards it takes to become an American Gem Society store?

Membership in the AGS requires members to comply with stringent criteria for doing business. As a jewelry store dedicated to providing our customers with the highest level of information and customer care, David Gardner’s Jewelers’ core values are perfectly in line with the aspirations and guiding principles of the AGS, where integrity is paramount. The Gardners continue to be industry leaders, as David earned the most prestigious credentials in the jewelry industry and empowers his employees in moving toward the same goals.

Our membership with AGS links us with the world’s most respected jewelry retailers, suppliers, and companies who share our values and standards for protecting and improving the purchasing experience for our customers.

We have developed amazing relationships over the years, each of them unique and precious to us. This partnership with David Gardner’s has been in the works for quite some time, and we are thrilled to be able to finally share it with you!

The Celebrations Continue through our Exciting Collaboration

Our partnership with this exclusive supplier – which is a DeBeers sightholder and world-renowned diamond cutter – is almost like being a kid in a candy store. Thanks to this partnership, David Gardner’s Jewelers will now be able to offer an even larger selection of some of the most exquisite, responsibly sourced diamonds.

What’s more, this supplier has differentiated itself from the start. They have continued to stay at the top of their game while adapting to stay agile during significant shifts in the industry and technology. Their philosophy adheres to the Diamond Trading Company’s Best Practice Principles to ensure total integrity throughout the entire diamond pipeline while being invested in the communities where they mine in Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia by providing jobs and support for those communities, including giving back to schools.

Highlights from Our Once-In-A-Lifetime Experience

This spring, our team had the fantastic opportunity to tour one of their state-of-the-art factories in NYC. It’s hard even to describe what a privilege it was to sit down with the planners, cutters, and polishers and witness the authentic craftsmanship and skill that goes into each stone. We were able to connect with their experts and learn what it takes to execute the process of cutting diamonds for light performance and maximum BRILLIANCE. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us, and we hope to bring the depth of our knowledge and the excitement from our experience back to you.

Here’s what we learned:

The Planning Phase

The difference between a piece of rough diamond and a finished (gem) is a time-consuming process. The rough is examined first by experienced experts, then verified by 3-D software. This part of the planning process generally takes weeks, sometimes months. The experts are able to identify and plan for multiple different shapes and weights, all cut from the same piece of diamond rough. Going through this process will ensure our customers will hold a piece of expert craftsmanship in their hands.

Cutting and Polishing Flawless Diamonds

With 20-40 years of experience under their belts, the master cutters in their NYC factory harness the knowledge, tools, and techniques that are only done in a few cities worldwide.

Fun fact: The process of cutting a diamond that’s 20 carats or more is so tricky and (nerve-racking!) that sometimes they’ll create 7-10 resin replicas of the diamond rough and practice cutting the models over and over until they are sure of every single cut they’ll make for the real diamond. It needs to be perfect and it always is!

The (Masters) Behind the Brilliance

The individuals working there are genuine and kind, and they sincerely care about their work. They are completely devoted to their craft, using the latest in technology, and staying on the cutting edge (pun intended!) of their industry. They want to keep learning and growing to give their customers the most incredible experience they can and an experience that we intend to pass on to our customers!

Not Every Jeweler has a Trusted Relationship with Sightholders

David Gardner’s exclusive partnership will enrich our customers’ experience. How? Diamonds can be cut for size or for light performance and maximum brilliance. Our partner’s diamonds are cut for the latter. This means a 2.50 carat diamond cut for brilliance will be far more beautiful than a 3 carat diamond cut for size. When rough diamonds are shipped to the US, they are cut and polished in our partner’s factory and sent directly to us. They reject nearly 80% of the rough they source from the mines, so the stones have already been through an extremely selective process before they get to David Gardner’s.

They are the best in our industry, and we couldn’t be more excited! Walking through their factory and meeting the craftsmen involved in the process – we were having a “pinch me, I’m dreaming” moment.
